What Goes Into a Dental Evaluation?

Has it been a while since you’ve been in the dental chair for a checkup? Are you new to the East Norriton, Pennsylvania, area and looking for a new dentist? Did you get a new insurance company and need a new dental provider? Is your child now in their teen years and need a general dentist provider instead of a pediatric dentist?

Whatever the reason may be, now is the time to schedule your appointment for a dental checkup at Cooley Bentz Dental Associates.

Initial Steps

After you have done your research on dentists and have read the testimonials from other patients, and are sure you have found a dentist that suits you and your family, then the next step is making your appointment. At our practice, you can fill out a form online, and a member of our staff will get back to you with an appointment confirmation. Remember to bring in your insurance card, and any questions you may have for the dentist.

The First Visit

Once you step into our office, you’ll be greeted by a member of our team who will ask you to fill out some standard paperwork, including medical history and insurance information. (You can visit our website to download the paperwork and fill it out ahead of time if you would like; just bring it with you when you come to the office.) While you are filling out the paperwork  in our waiting area, you can enjoy a complimentary beverage or healthy snack. There is wi-fi, a television, and a video game system to help pass the time and relieve any anxiety you may have.

If you are worried about the costs associated with routine dental care, be sure to read our financial information page. Our staff will work with your insurance company, and help you come up with a payment plan that works for you, if needed. Money worries shouldn’t keep you from taking care of your only smile!

The Initial Consultation

During your first appointment at Cooley Bentz Dental Associates, we’ll meet with you to go over your dental history and discuss any issues you may have. If you have any tooth or gum pain, now would be the time to discuss it.

Next, you will get X-rays. Our office uses digital X-rays, which means less radiation and a clearer picture for the doctor. When the X-rays are ready, the dentist will discuss any issues they can see on the X-rays with you, and will set up your individualized treatment plan. You will then schedule another appointment, and that is when a dental hygienist will clean your teeth.

The First Evaluation

After you have your initial consultation, it’s time for a dental hygienist to clean your teeth. First, they will use small metal tools to remove the plaque and tartar buildup on your teeth. Next, the hygienist will floss your teeth, and they may offer you tips on more efficient ways to take care of your teeth. Then the hygienist will use a small, specialized electric toothbrush to clean and polish all of your teeth. After that is done, you may receive a fluoride treatment, which will help make your teeth stronger. After the hygienist is done, the doctor will come in to give your mouth a thorough evaluation. They will be checking for cavities and looking at your overall oral health. If they find any issues with your X-rays or during the evaluation, then the two of you will discuss a treatment plan. After that, you’re on your way!

Don’t forget to brush.

It’s important to keep up with good oral hygiene all year long. Dentists recommend brushing at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste  and flossing after you brush. Some dentists also recommend using a daily mouthwash as well.

Remember, the American Dental Association recommends you visit the dentist twice a year for a regular dental checkup as part of good oral hygiene. And if you ever have any questions, visit our dental FAQ page or reach out to us if you have any other questions.
