Family-Friendly Attractions in and Around Norristown
Norristown is a wonderful place to raise a family. Not only are our neighborhoods and schools wonderful, but there’s also plenty for families to do in town or in nearby areas.
If your family is overdue for a fun day out, here are 8 of our favorites places to visit that allow you and your family to stay safe and healthy.
1. Elmwood Park Zoo
The Elmwood Park Zoo is a local family favorite destination. You can easily spend a day walking around the zoo seeing your favorite animals and perhaps catching an educational show! If your kids are 6 years of age or older, they can even feed the zoo’s otters or giraffes.
The Elmwood Park Zoo also hosts a number of different holiday events, day camps for kids, and STEM-based outdoor workshops throughout the year. You can also keep an eye out for upcoming Eco-Family Programs that get the whole family involved.
2. Treetop Adventures at Elmwood Park Zoo
Also located at the Elmwood Park Zoo is Treetop Adventures, the only ropes course in Pennsylvania that has zip lines running around exhibits. Although Treetop Adventures is located at the zoo, it really stands as its own attraction, as your family can easily spend a whole afternoon going through different courses.
Treetop Adventures has six different courses, including a climbing challenge and zip line for youngsters ages 4+. The remaining courses are suitable for older kids and adults (54” minimum height requirement). For a real challenge, you can even take your family on the Night Adventures course that comes complete with a cookout and bonfire afterward!
3. Merrymead Farm
Merrymead Farm is a delightful place for families to visit any time of the year and is just a short drive away in Lansdale. Seasonal highlights include beautiful springtime flower arrangements, a huge selection of fresh produce in the summer, pumpkin patches in the fall, and farm-grown Christmas trees in the winter. There are also plenty of holiday events to attend.
While you’re exploring Merrymead Farm, don’t forget to pick up some baked goods and ice cream from the country store! You and your kids will be thrilled to end your farm adventure with a cone of one of their 32 flavors of ice cream.
4. Expedition Escape
For a unique family bonding experience, book an escape room at Expedition Escape! Expedition Escape currently has four escape rooms: Lucky Dice Diner, Aunt Edna’s Inheritance, Quest for the Throne, and Baker Street Mystery.
All Expedition Escape rooms require a minimum of two players, with most recommending a group of about four to eight. Unlike other escape room companies, Expedition Escape has a “no strangers” policy, which means you and your family won’t be put in a room with strangers. This is perfect for social distancing policies and also makes for a true family bonding experience.
5. Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park
In East Norristown, you’ll find Urban Air Adventure Park, a trampoline and family center. Urban Air is very popular for hosting kids’ birthdays and events, but it’s also perfect for families to burn off some energy and have fun. There’s plenty to do for all ages as well!
There are about 15 different attractions at Urban Air, most of which take advantage of trampolines to make things extra exciting. They also have rope courses, climbing walls, a tube playground, basketball court, and even a warrior ninja-inspired obstacle course.
Urban Air also has plenty of space for adults to relax while the kids play. You can also take a break at the cafe for some cold drinks, pizza, and other snacks.
6. Norristown Farm Park
When it’s time to head outdoors for fresh air and nature, you can’t go wrong with the Norristown Farm Park. This unique park features a number of activities for families with kids of all ages.
There are miles and miles of trails (paved and unpaved) for walking, running, cycling, and more. It’s also a beautiful location for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing in the winter. The park even has a stocked trout stream for fishing! During the spring and summer, the Farm Park is a great spot for a family picnic, while a hike during the fall offers a great opportunity to see the leaves change.
7. LEGOLAND Discovery Center Philadelphia
There’s something about LEGO bricks that capture the imagination of both the young and the old. The LEGOLAND Discovery Center is right by Norristown, and visiting is a must if your family members are fans of building with LEGO kits.
The LEGOLAND Center has 10 play areas, an interactive LEGO ride, and a 4D LEGO movie theater. The play areas include the LEGO Ninjago Training Camp, MiniLand, Pirate Adventure Island, Duplo Park, and more. You’ll also find building areas, such as Earthquake Tables, LEGO Racers, and the LEGO Creative Workshop.
8. Arnold’s Family Fun Center
Arnold’s Family Fun Center is one of the largest indoor fun centers in the country. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Norristown but well worth it, considering everything this place has to offer.
Arnold’s has bowling, go-karts, laser tag, blacklight mini-golf, and a plethora of arcade games. They also have a great cafe with pizza, snacks, ice cream, and slushies. Arnold’s Family Fun Center doesn’t require any sort of entrance fee, relying on a pay-to-play pricing style instead. This makes things quite a bit more affordable for families, especially if you’d like to take a break while your kids play.
